Why Does My Vehicle Need Timing Belt Replacement?

The timing belt is what allows the valves and the pistons in your engine to move at the exact right time. It does this by synchronizing the movement of the crankshaft with the movement of the camshaft or camshafts. In some older engines called non-interference engines or freewheeling engines, a broken timing belt will simply cause the engine to stop. This is not the case in modern interference engines. To achieve greater power and efficiency, these engines are laid out so that the open valves occupy a space in the cylinder that the piston will occupy when it's fully extended. The timing belt makes sure that the valves close before the piston extends. If the timing belt breaks, the valves will open and shut at the wrong times, and the pistons will strike the valves. This causes massive and irreparable engine damage.
